Postgraduate Qualifications in Place Management and Leadership

Manchester Metropolitan University has validated a suite of specialist qualifications designed for those who work to make places better, through development, management, or marketing: These qualifications are the PgCert, PgDip and MSc in Place Management and Leadership.

These are all new awards. Whilst over 100 students have successfully studied at Introductory Diploma, International Certificate or Masters level with us, our new postgraduate suite of awards includes more emphasis on the technological drivers of place change, the importance of community development and develops skills in place leadership as well as analysing ‘big data’ to inform place decision making.

Course delivery

Two modes of study are available: Blended learning and distance learning.  We recommend students opt for the blended learning delivery model, for the best expereince. There is a three-day workshop in Manchester backed up by distance learning for each 30 credit module. Feedback from previous programmes has demonstrated that students really value the specialist nature of the content. Teaching is undertaken by leading academics and practitioners in the field. Students have come from over 20 countries to study place management with us, including the USA, Australia, Singapore, South Africa as well as UK and Europe.

Town center vitality

The Institute of Place Management has developed a new evidence-based approach for town centres that will provide you and your stakeholders with expert advice, and support the development of an effective agenda for managing change. Arising from a £250,000 knowledge exchange project supported by the Economic and Social Research Council, accessing more than half a billion footfall movements provided by Springboard and developed and tested with ten town partnerships, we can help your town centre move forward. The Institute can work with you to organise a workshop in your centre that will engage and enthuse stakeholders. We can run the workshop as a stand-alone event or as part of a three step programme.

Step 1: Analysis – Review of the evidence available about your town centre performance, assessment of the town centre and discussion with commissioning partner.

Step 2: Development workshop – led by our expert team and working with your stakeholders – aimed at developing an understanding of the town centre and its options. This will be followed by discussion with the commissioning partner.

Step 3: Report – we will prepare a short report offering advice, information and recommendations for action. The report will be available within two weeks of the workshop date. Two printed copies will be provided for the commissioning partner together with a digital copy.
